The Rag Land in Redfern

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the look-out for new, up-and-coming cafes that are untouched by the masses.

And if you’re not on the look-out but are interested to know the trendiest and best cafe and restaurant finds, you’re lucky you have me to do the hard yards for you.

The Rag Land, in Sydney’s newest hotspot Refern, is one of those great gems that restore your faith in quality food with reasonable prices and exceptional customer service.

This hipster-come-vintage-come-rustic little cafe is slowly but surely making a big name for itself in the foodie scene.

With its furnishings made entirely from recyclables, even including an old ironing-board as a faux table, you may well understand how the Rag Land has stolen locals and even non-locals hearts.

The cafe is buzzing with chatter and cool beats, the walls adorned with the works of a local Redfern artist, as well as some quirky old kitchen appliances and other interesting finds.

After hearing that the pea fritters with poached egg, rocket and tomato chutney ($12) were a must-have, I decided I should try those. Fritters are not usually something I would go for (I’m a bircher muesli kinda gal), but these fritters, oh my, these babies were just delicious. A long, loud ‘mmmm’ most definitely escaped from my mouth without much warning.

The warm, gooey potato went beautifully with the contrast of the bitter rocket and sweet chutney. The poached eggs perfectly cooked – the golden centre dripping gloriously over the fritters.

My friend opted for the Rag Land french toast ($12), which was decadently sweet and soft, the sour berries and ricotta an excellent contrast to the sweet caramelised bananas that all came with it.

Word on the street is that the bacon and egg roll ($8) is an absolute must, something I’ll definitely be trying on my next visit. The Rag Land also offers seriously yummy sounding sandwiches, all for $8.50, such as the garlicky mushroom, tomato and rocket with melted cheese sandwich.

Their house blend coffee by Golden Cobra is also a must-have. It was too hot for a regular coffee so I chose to have an iced-coffee which was not too strong and not too weak; in the words of Goldilocks, it was “just right.”

So if you’re pondering where to go and what to do this weekend, try the up-and-coming gem that is Rag Land. You won’t regret it.
